LinkOut is a feature of PubMed that provides links to web-accessible resources directly from PubMed citations. You can use LinkOut to determine whether Blessing Health Professions Library provides electronic full text for a journal article and/or whether the article is available in a printed journal in the library.
You can also use LinkOut to discover links to other useful online resources
How do I know if the library has the full text online or in print? When you enter PubMed through the "PubMed" link on the library's webpage, you will see our icons on the citations for which we provide electronic full text or print copies of the article.
How do I "turn on" the library's LinkOut icons in PubMed? There are three ways to see the library's icons in PubMed.
1. Always enter PubMed through the "PubMed" link on the library's website. 2. Always enter PubMed through this special URL: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?myncbishare=bhplib. 3. Use your My NCBI account: -Sign in to My NCBI -Click on "Filters" in the blue sidebar menu -Select PubMed from the list of databases -Click on the "Search" tab -Enter Blessing Health Professions Library in the search box and click "Go" -Click on the library in the list of Matching Filters -Click on the checkbox next to "Add a result tab for all items that match this filter" -Click the checkbox next to "Add a link icon to every item that matches this filter"
Search PubMed as usual. Then, select Abstract or Citation from the Display dropdown menu. You will see the library's icons. The icons appear on citations from the library's subscribed journals only. To see the icons, you MUST enter PubMed using one of the three methods listed above.
Click
PubMed and are directed to the full-text provider's site.
Click
If you see both icons, it means that the library has the article in print and online.
What electronic journals are available through LinkOut? The library's electronic full-text icon will appear on citations if: 1. The library has access to the elctronic journal through a subscription or licensing agreement AND 2. The publisher or agent with which the library has an agreement provides links to PubMed for the journal. You
can also find links to free full text in PubMed. Look for this
icon in the Summary display: that there is a link to free full text on the citation.
Some records show an icon that is not your library's icon. What does this mean? You may see icons that are not our library's icons. These link to the full text at the publisher's site. Some articles may be available free of charge, however many publishers require a subscription to the journal or provide access to the article for a fee. For
best results, always click on the library's icon to access the full text
or look for the free full text icon ( the Summary display. If there is no library icon and the full text is not freely available, you may be able to access the full text in another way.
Can I limit my search to items available through Blessing Health Professions Library? When you enter the PubMed link through the library website, you will see our library's filter tab in your search result. Click this tab to view citations that are available through our library.
How can I view full text from off-campus? Call or e-mail the library to find out the username and password for a certain journal.
Why can I view the full text for some issues of a journal and not for others? Access to full text is determined by the terms of a subscription license or contract between Blessing Health Professions Library and the full-text provider. The full-text provider determines which years and issues are available on the Internet and the cost of accessing these issues.
Additionally, full-text providers may choose not to provide links in PubMed for certain volumes, issues, or articles. Reasons for this vary, but typically full text may not be available for some material, including very new citations, letters and editorials.
Why don't I get the full text when I click on the Print icon? The Print icon indicates that the library has the volume and issue for the citation available in print. You will need to visit the library in person to use the paper copies of the journal to obtain the article.
I know we have full text access to a journal, but I don't see the library's icon in PubMed. Why? Library links are created using information submitted to LinkOut by full-text providers. If a full-text provider does not submit linking information, library links cannot be made.
Some of the reasons why your icons may not be appearing on a journal are: -You have not "turned on" the LinkOut icons. Try entering PubMed through one of the methods described here. -Some full-text providers are not yet LinkOut participants. The library's subscription may be from a provider that does not participate in LinkOut. You can check the library catalog or e-journals list to see if the article is available. -You may be looking for a very new citation, or a citation for which the provider has not submitted links to LinkOut. -LinkOut may be experiencing technical difficulties.
What if I don't see your library's icon, but I want the full text? We can order the article via Interlibrary loan. Fill out this form.
How can I use LinkOut to find resources other than full text? Links to other resources are located in the LinkOut display. You can access the LinkOut display by selecting "LinkOut" from the Display dropdown menu or by clicking "Links to the right of the citation and selecting "LinkOut" from the resulting menu.
Can I limit a search to articles that have full-text available? Yes. You can use one of these search aliases:
full-text[sb] full text[sb]
Please note: Many of these articles require a subscription or fee.
How can I search for free full-text articles in PubMed? You can use one of the search aliases for free full-text:
free full-text[sb] free full text[sb]
For example: diabetes AND free full-text[sb]
